nsurance firm AXA Mandiri Financial Services (AXA Mandiri) and Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday to improve the sharia insurance literacy rate among Muslims.

“We sincerely appreciate the preachers of the MUI, who are ready to accept our share of knowledge on sharia insurance literacy and their readiness to deliver the knowledge to the congregation,” AXA Mandiri president director Jean Philippe Vandenschrick told reporters after the signing ceremony of the MoU.

Meanwhile, AXA Mandiri alternative channel director Henky Oktavianus explained that his company had started the campaign on sharia insurance literacy last year, with the hope that it would reach 10,000 people each year.

MUI chairman Ma’ruf Amin said his organization would support effort to provide useful knowledge for Muslims, including on sharia insurance.

“Thousands of MUI’s preachers will participate in this program. Through a comprehensive understanding of sharia insurance, we hope Muslims will be able to choose the best insurance,” he added.

According to the National Survey on Financial Literacy and Inclusion (SNLIK) 2016, the literacy rate for insurance is only 15.76 percent, while the literacy rate for sharia insurance is only 2.51 percent.

Meanwhile, data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in February shows that sharia insurance assets increased by 20 percent to Rp 34 trillion from the figure in February 2016. (bbn)
