President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo left Jakarta on Saturday for Saudi Arabia to attend the Arab-Islamic-American Summit, which will be held on May 21 in Riyadh.
The President and his entourage departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta on the Presidential Aircraft at 1 p.m. local time.
Jokowi is scheduled to meet with Saudi Arabian King Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud, who invited Jokowi to attend the summit.
“[This working visit] is a response to an invitation directly given to me by King Salman's special envoy to attend the summit, which will be opened tomorrow [Sunday]. I will only spend one day in Saudi Arabia and I will come back to Indonesia in the evening,” said Jokowi as quoted by a statement released by the Presidential Office on Saturday.
Fifty five heads of state are set to attend the Arab-Islamic-American Summit, which will discuss international cooperation in the fight against radicalism and terrorism.
“Indonesia would like to contribute to efforts to maintain peace and security in the world, including by attending the summit. We will use this moment to convey the importance of soft power in fighting radicalism and terrorism,” Jokowi said.
The President is also scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Syeikh Hasina.
Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, the President’s military secretary Air Vice Marshall Trisno Hendradi, Presidential Security Detail (Paspampres) commander Suhartono, Presidential special staff member Diaz Hendropriyono and Presidential Secretariat Protocol Bureau head Ari Setiawan will accompany the President.
