obertus Rubiyatmoko was inaugurated archbishop of Semarang during a ceremony at Bhayangkara Field at the National Police Academy complex in Semarang, Central Java, on Friday.
Thousands of Catholics from 100 parishes in the Semarang Archdiocese and communities outside the city attended the event.
Jakarta Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo, accompanied by Bandung Archbishop Antonius Subianto Bunyamin and Malang Archbishop Henricus Pidyarto Gunawan, ordained Rubiyatmoko as Semarang archbishop in the ceremony.
Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia Antonio Guido Filipazzi and 32 bishops from archdioceses across Indonesia attended the event. Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Condro Kirono and Surakarta Mayor FX Hadi Rudy Rudyatmo were also present.
Filipazzi said in his remarks that by becoming an archbishop, Rubiyatmoko had become part of a heritage of true prophets. “This is the beginning of his work as the successor of the prophets,” said Filipazzi.
Meanwhile, Suharyo said “bishop” was a word that meant “the visitor”. “I believe that after his ordaining, Father Rubiyatmoko will visit all followers and search for them to save them so that there will be no one who feels marginalized,” he said.
Rubiyatmoko obtained a doctorate in church law from the Gregoriana Papal University in Rome from 1993 to 1997. Pope Franciscus announced the ordaining of Rubiyatmoko as Semarang Archbishop at the Vatican in Rome on March 18. Rubiyatmoko was born in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on Oct. 10, 1963. (ebf)
