he Karanganyar Police have arrested three suspects for their alleged involvement in the deaths of three freshmen during an orientation program held by the Mapala UNISI climbing club of the Yogyakarta-based Indonesian Islamic University (UII).

The police said they arrested the three suspects as they failed to fulfill two police summons for questioning in the case.

Karanganyar Police chief Adj. Sr.Comr. Ade Safri Simanjuntak said the three suspects, identified only as TA, NA and HS, were arrested on Sunday. TA was arrested in Ngaglik, Sleman, at around 11 a.m. local time while NA and HS were apprehended in a hideout in Ngaglik at around 3 p.m.

The police are still pursuing three other suspects–DK, TN and RF–who remain at large, he said.

“We have deployed one team to search for them. We have also called on the three suspects to immediately surrender so that this case can be finished soon,” said Ade on Monday.

An orientation program held at Mount Lawu in Central Java from Jan 13 to Jan 20 reportedly turned violent, claiming the lives of three students and injuring 14 others. The police named six suspects in the case.

The six suspects were scheduled to attend a questioning on May 15. However, a team of lawyers representing Mapala sent a letter to the Karanganyar Police requesting that the questioning be delayed.

“There was no logical reason for us to delay the questioning. The police have set up an investigation so there is no reason for any delay,” said Ade. (dis/ebf)
