he Central Java Police's Special Criminal Investigation Department raided a warehouse in Kaliwungu district, Kendal regency, Central Java, on Tuesday and confiscated 35 tons of non-certified sugar.
The sugar was allegedly being stockpiled by the owner of plywood firm PT KMP, Central Java Police spokesman Sr.Comr. Djardod Padakova said.
“We received tip-off from the public about the sugar hoarding by PT KMP,” he said in Semarang on Tuesday.
The refined sugar was branded Gendhis produced by PT GMM, a sugar plant in Blora regency. The sugar was packed in 722 sacks, with one sack containing 50 kilograms of sugar. The police suspect the sugar was to be sold on the market.
The police say that PT KMP is a plywood producer with no permit to trade in sugar.
“The management could only show us their permit in plywood and not in sugar distribution,” Djarod said.
Employees claimed that the sugar belonged to LK, the director of the company.
Special Crimes Investigation Department head Sr. Comr. Lukas Akbar Abriari said the police would summon witnesses for questioning in the case. (rin)
