aritime Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has admitted that potential economic losses in the maritime sector could reach between Rp 11 trillion (US$827.57 million) to Rp 12 trillion per year due to inefficiency.

The efficiency occurs in loading and unloading processes at ports across the country, the minister said.

“We want to continuously improve the condition. I want to save between Rp 11 trillion t Rp 12 trillion in July,” said Luhut as reported by kontan.co.id on Monday.

The minister also recorded inefficiency in Batam, Riau Islands, where foreign ships dock with no benefit to the Indonesian government.

He promised to carry out tough monitoring, including by using satellites, to prevent any ships from carrying out illegal activity.

“So far, we don’t know who benefits from this activity,” he said, adding that the government would collect rental fees from the ships that docked in Batam waters.

He said the government could gain an additional Rp 2 trillion to Rp 3 trillion in revenue from the collection of fees.  (bbn)
