View all search resultstate salt producer PT Garam plans to move back its headquarters to Kalianget in Sumenep Regency on Madura Island in East Java from the provincial capital of Surabaya in an attempt to boost productivity.
In 1998, PT Garam moved its headquarters from Kalianget in Sumenep to Surabaya.
The firm is currently revitalizing its factory on the island, known as a quality salt producing area, and plans to build another factory.
“Sumenep has vast salt producing areas. We need to increase PT Garam's production. God willing, we also plan to build another salt manufacturing plant here aswell in August, 2018,” said State Enterprise Minister Rini Soemarno during the launch of the Farmer Card on Tuesday.
Rini said improvements to the salt industry were needed to reduce Indonesia’s salt imports.
Due to a prolonged wet season last year, the country imported 3 million tons of household and industrial salt, up from roughly 1.7 million tons in 2015, Indonesian Association of Salt Industries (AIPGI) said previously.
Meanwhile, the national demand for salt hovers at around 4 million tons annually. (bbn)
