orruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesperson Febri Diansyah announced on Friday that the acid attack against senior antigraft investigator Novel Baswedan could have been committed by trained assailants.
He made the statement based on preliminary results of the National Commission on Human Rights’ (Komnas HAM) early investigation into the incident.
Two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle threw acid at Novel as he was walking home from attending morning prayers at a mosque near his home in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on April 11. He was rushed to a hospital emergency room with burns on his face.
Febri said the KPK was still waiting for further information from the police about the case. The National Police has questioned several people suspected of being involved in the attack, but they were all released due to lack of evidence.
Novel is still undergoing medical treatment at the Singapore National Eye Center. Regarding his condition, Febri said the investigator is gradually recuperating from his injuries.
“There are some improvements to his health. His right eye is better, although his left eye is still recovering,” he said.
Febri said doctors could not yet predict when Novel would be able to return to Indonesia as he still required intensive treatment for his left eye. (kuk/ebf)
