P

olice officers, supported by Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) and Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel, carried out on Friday Operation Pekat to combat social problems in the society.

The operation was conducted below a toll road near the Kalijodo child-friendly integrated public space (RPTRA) in North Jakarta at around 10:30 p.m.

Penjaringan Police chief Adj.Sr.Comr. Bismo Teguh said personnel found several bottles of liquor and condoms, among other items.

“After searching shanty buildings in the location, we found condoms, drug paraphernalia, sharp weapons and bottles of liquor. This is not in line with the spirit of Ramadhan, which we should honor,” said Tegus as quoted by kompas.com on Friday.

During the raid, the police asked squatters to show their IDs, a request to which they complied.

Over the past few weeks, dozens of people have started building semi-permanent dwellings under the toll road, which lies across Kalijodo Park.  It was suspected the dwellings had been used for prostitution.

Kalijodo, a former red-light district, began a transformation into an RPTRA in February last year under the leadership of then-Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama. (cal/ebf)
