section of the Kramat Jati wholesale market in East Jakarta caught fire early Monday, burning at least 90 kiosks at the market's herbs and spices section. Kramat Jati is an important market in the city's food supply chain.
Acting Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat guaranteed that the city's food supply would not be interrupted following the incident. He also said that the fire did not affect the market's newly installed controlled atmosphere storage (CAS) facility.
"I was worried that the incident would damage the CAS machine, but apparently it did not, because the incident occurred far from the facility," said Djarot at the City Hall.
The facility, which commenced operations last Tuesday, controls temperature in the market's food storage facility to extend the longevity of foods, like chilis and tomatos.
Djarot also said that the administration would provide temporary locations for vendors whose kiosks caught fire. (wit)
