olice stations across Jakarta are opening their parking lots to residents who want to entrust their motorcycles and cars to the police while they are away for the Idul Fitri holiday.

"Precinct police [Polres] and subprecinct police [Polsek] stations will be ready to [keep] private vehicles [safe]," Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. M. Iriawan said on Wednesday.

He added that the Jakarta Police would also work with community unit (RT/RW) heads and village-level security and public order advisors (Babinkamtibmas) to patrol neighborhoods and monitor empty homes.

The law-enforcement agency has also pledged to optimize its operation to combat street crime in Jakarta, which usually sees an increase in cases during Ramadhan.

On Wednesday, police revealed they had arrested 249 people during their security operation codenamed Cipta Kondisi. Among those arrested were teenagers who were carrying sharp weapons while conducting “sahur on the road” (pre-dawn meal events).

Besides the weapons, officers also seized firearms, vehicles without licenses, drugs and liquor during operation Cipta Kondisi.

Meanwhile, police are urging Jakartans to refrain from participating in takbiran (eve of Idul Fitri) parades as they may cause traffic jams, street accidents and clashes among residents.

"It would be better for residents to hold takbiran in mosques or mushola [prayer room]," Iriawan said.
