ast Java's Jember Police has deployed snipers from the East Java Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) Corps to secure the routes around Mount Gumitir, on the border between Jember and Bayuwangi, during the Idul Fitri exodus.

“We have prepared [snipers] to anticipate bajing loncat [highway robbers], who have been active in the area since four years ago. Besides, the area is mountainous and quite susceptible to crime,” Jember Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Kusworo Wibowo said, as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

The police and related authorities have also prepared heavy equipment to anticipate natural disasters, especially in areas prone to landslides located along the border of Jember and Bayuwangi, Kusworo added.

“We strive to do our best to secure the travelers’ journey until they arrive at their respective destinations,” Kusworo said, adding that he hoped the police measures would protect all people traveling during the homebound exodus season.

The Transportation Ministry has predicted that during this year's exodus, the country would see a 4.8 percent surge in the number of people traveling by public transportation to 19.04 million. The homebound Idul Fitri exodus season has been under way since Monday. (afr)
