akarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said the city administration still had quite a lot of work to do as the capital celebrated its 490th anniversary on Thursday.

“There must be awareness because Jakarta belongs to everyone,” Djarot said at the National Monument (Monas) park during a ceremony celebrating the anniversary as quoted by kompas.com.

He stressed that Jakartans still needed to improve their mentality about several issues including their dwellings, waste management, street vendors and traffic.

The city’s anniversary this year has been met with little celebration, with Djarot not planning anything major.

He kicked off a fireworks display at the Jakarta Fair in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday night.

Djarot reminded Jakarta residents to not always rely on the city’s popular street cleaners, known as the “orange troops,” to deal with waste because each resident had a responsibility to help keep the environment clean.

On the illegal dwelling issue, Djarot said that, as the country’s capital city, Jakarta should have a good image, meaning that people should not establish semi-permanent houses under bridges, a problem that has recently resurfaced in areas where the administration has carried out revitalization works.
