he Badung Police in Bali are examining 12 witnesses consisting of inmates and prison officers after four foreign prisoners escaped from the resort island's Kerobokan Penitentiary.
“Ten witnesses being questioned are Kerobokan prison officers while two others are friends of the escapees,” Adj. Comr. Mikael Hutabarat, chief of the Badung Police’s criminal investigation unit, said as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.
He said proper security arrangements and procedures had been undertaken around the time the four foreign inmates escaped on Sunday evening or early on Monday. Prison guards found they were not in their cells on Monday morning.
During their investigation, prison officers found a tunnel had been dug under the prison’s walls. It was believed the inmates had escaped through it.
“We have checked the tunnel and found that it leads outside the prison, but we will check it again,” said Mikael.
Security authorities are investigating further to determine who dug the tunnel. Preliminary investigation results showed it had likely been dug sometime before the escape.
Kerobokan Prison warden Tonny Nainggolan said earlier the tunnel had been covered with concrete and no excavated soil was found nearby. Officers were aware of the concrete but they were not suspicious of it as they thought it was just a septic tank.
The escapees were Shaun Edward Davidson of Australia, Dimitar Nikolov Iliev of Bulgaria, Sayed Mohammed Said of India and Tee Kok King Bin Tee Kim Sai of Malaysia. They had been detained over various charges, including immigration violations and drug trafficking. (saf/ebf)
