tate-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II president director Muhammad Awaluddin predicted that hundreds of thousands of passengers would pack Soekarno-Hatta airport’s domestic departure terminals on Friday, the peak day of departure for the annual Idul Fitri exodus.

“We predict there will be about 215,000 to 220,000 passengers today,” Awaluddin told reporters after attending a “sahur (pre-dawn meal) on the road” event at Terminal 1 on Friday, adding that the predicted numbers for Saturday were the same.

The predicted passenger numbers were also influenced by the 313 additional flights added for the Idul Fitri holiday this year.

“Until last night, there were 1.5 million Idul Fitri passengers at Soekarno-Hatta. The figure is 7.5 percent higher than last year, when there were 1.4 million,” Awaluddin said.

According to kompas.com surveillance, some domestic departure terminals in Soekarno-Hatta were crowded with travelers on Friday early morning.

In some points, passengers had to make additional lines as queues were becoming excessively long.

Despite the massive crowds, the flow of passengers proceeding to the check-in area ran smoothly. Soekarno-Hatta management provided a self-check-in facility without luggage in the terminal lobby to ease the flow of passengers. (dra)
