The commuter train is a preferred mode of transportation for residents of Greater Jakarta because of its extensive coverage, relatively low fares and congestion-free rides. Trains serve around 1 million passengers daily.

The plan to extend services to Cikarang emerged in 2015 because of the high number of people traveling between the city and Jakarta. (dmr)
