T

he Semanggi Interchange is to be equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) to prevent vandalism, Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said after the inauguration of the interchange, which was led by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday.

“I have ordered the installation of CCTV on the interchange so that it won’t be defaced by irresponsible people,” Djarot said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.

Less than a week after the interchange was opened to traffic on July 28, graffiti, in the form of random letters written in black and red paint, was found on one ramp of the interchange connecting Slipi, West Jakarta, and Blok M, South Jakarta.

Djarot said further that people who dared to vandalize the interchange would be ordered to do community service.

“We will ask them to clean it,” Djarot said.

Meanwhile, Djarot said Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri would donate five baobab trees for the green space around the interchange.

The trees will help with water absorption and catchment in the area, he said.

The 1.6-kilometer interchange was constructed under the leadership of former Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and is expected to reduce traffic congestion by 30 percent.

It has two ramps, with the first connecting Slipi to Blok M and the second connecting Cawang, East Jakarta, and the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta. (cal)
