he owners of hundreds of rental cars in West Jakarta have accumulated a vehicle ownership tax debt amounting to Rp 754 million (US$56,458), an official has said.
Elling Hartono, head of West Jakarta municipality’s vehicle ownership and vehicle-ownership transfer fee unit, said on Wednesday that the amount was an accumulation of tax arrears from 335 cars belonging to three rental-vehicle companies in Kebon Jeruk and Cengkareng.
"We will visit the companies to confirm whether the hundreds of cars are still owned by them or have instead already been transferred to other parties,” said Elling as quoted by kompas.com.
Elling called on car owners to make use of the city’s program to waive fines for arrears until Aug. 31.
However, after the period, those who had failed to meet their obligations would face two percent fines per month, said Jakarta Tax and Levy Board head Edi Sumantri separately.
Moreover, vehicles which have taxes yet to be paid off for three years would be confiscated, he said.
“In such a case, we will also impose fines for towing services and overnight stay at Rp 500,000 per night,” Edi explained. (agn)
