ndonesia, in its latest statement, warned that the use of force in Venezuela could set a dangerous precedent undermining sovereignty, as scrutiny grows over Jakarta’s muted response to United States actions.

Reiterating its earlier call for dialogue, self-restraint and respect for international law, the Foreign Ministry underscored the importance of humanitarian law and civilian protection, as the US continued to threaten further strikes.

“Indonesia expresses its grave concern over any actions involving the use or threat of force, which risk setting a dangerous precedent in international relations and could undermine the regional stability, peace and the principles of sovereignty and diplomacy,” the ministry wrote in a statement on Sunday night that made no mention of the US.

“It is imperative that the international community respects the right and the will of the people of Venezuela to exercise their sovereignty and to determine their own path and future,” it continued.

Attention turned to Manhattan on Monday as deposed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was expected to make his first appearance in the US federal court on narco-terrorism charges, two days after his dramatic capture in Caracas sent shockwaves worldwide and drew widespread criticism.

Ordered by US President Donald Trump, the overnight raid that led to the capture of Maduro and the deaths of 40 people, including civilians, has sparked renewed scrutiny of Washington’s foreign policy, with governments around the world calling for respect for sovereignty and warning against unilateral action.

Trump praised the operation and said the US would assume temporary control of Venezuela. His administration has previously accused Maduro of rigging the 2024 Venezuelan election and running what it describes as a “narco-state”.
