A

uthorities in Jambi say livestock available for slaughtering on the upcoming Islamic Day of Sacrifice – Idul Adha – in 11 regencies and municipalities across the province amounts to 11,766 animals.

They comprise 4,812 heads of cattle, 1,240 buffaloes, 2,224 goats and 20 sheep.

“This is our preliminary estimate. It is likely that there will be more livestock for slaughtering on the day,” Jambi Food Crops, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry Agency head Akhmad Mausul said on Thursday.

The public holiday of Idul Adha falls on Sept. 1 this year.

Akhmad said the total livestock available for sale for this year’s Idul Adha was projected to be “adequate” to meet demand. The agency was ready to bring in livestock from areas outside Jambi, such as from Lampung, Padang (West Sumatra) and Palembang (South Sumatra), if it found that livestock supply was insufficient, he added.

“The livestock provided are all in healthy condition; they have passed various processes, from health checks to vaccinations. These measures were taken to prevent the spread of anthrax, which can directly infect humans,” said Akhmad.

He predicted that in Jambi city alone 1,685 heads of cattle, 85 buffaloes and 800 goats would be slaughtered for this year’s Idul Adha celebration. (ebf)
