A motorcycle taxi (ojek) driver, Topan Fernando, 20, was stabbed to death in Johar Baru district, Central Jakarta, on Monday.

The incident happened at 11:30 p.m. when the alleged perpetrator, Sadam, and his girlfriend Syiananda passed Jl. Kramat Pulo Gundul on a motorcycle, Central Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Suyudi Ario Seto said on Tuesday.

Topan and some of his friends reportedly catcalled Syiananda and repeatedly called her name.

“The perpetrator was angry and felt resentful [of the men catcalling his girlfriend]. He left the scene and came back with a sharp weapon,” Suyudi said.

Sadam then chased Topan, allegedly stabbed him in the left side of the chest and mid-torso and fled the scene.

Topan, who was badly injured, was announced dead on arrival at Johor Baru hospital.

Suyudi said that the perpetrator had been arrested.
