ogor Mayor Bima Arya has called on all related parties to share responsibility for the gladiator-like fight that killed senior high school SMA Budi Mulia student Hilarius Christian Event Raharjo, saying reforms should be made to the education system in the school.

He said the fight that involved students from SMA Budi Mulia and SMA Mardi Yuana must be jointly responded to.

“Legally, the management of SMA is no longer the authority of the Bogor City administration, but the West Java provincial administration. However, that doesn’t mean we can wash our hands of the problem,” Bima said during a discussion with SMA Budi Mulia’s headmaster and teachers.

“It’s important for us to examine the case. We are collecting information to see whether this [gladiator-like] fight has become a tradition at the school. If so, this tradition must be ended,” Bima added.

At the same time, SMA Budi Mulia headmaster Henrica said the incident took place outside the school. “Still, we have moral responsibilities, starting with providing him [Hilarius] with necessary treatment in hospital to holding prayers until 1,000 days have passed since his death. We hope this problem can be solved,” she said.

Henrica claimed she and other parties at the school did not know anything about the gladiator-like fight, locally known as “bom-boman.

Fourteen witnesses and four suspects were involved in a reconstruction of the events surrounding Hilarius' death, which took place over two hours at the Palupuh field behind SMA 7 Bogor, West Java, on Monday afternoon.  (ebf)
