espite lauding the Jakarta administration for improving the city in the last five years, the City Legislative Council (DPRD) has also underscored that the government failed to reach half of its targeted income.

“In the 2013-2017 RPJMD [mid-term regional development plan], the administration targeted to earn Rp 120 trillion [US$8.86 billion]. However, by the end of its tenure, the income was only Rp 59 trillion,” councilor Meity Magdalena Ussu from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle said during a plenary meeting between city administration officials and city councilors on Monday, kompas.com reported.

She was referring to the official accountability report (LPJ) submitted by the city administration, which during a one-term governorship period from 2012 to 2017, was led by three governors, namely Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat.

She said that the council suggested the administration optimize income from taxes in various fields such as from vehicles, advertisement and cigarettes.

To target recalcitrant taxpayers, who own luxurious cars, the council suggested the administration cooperate with the city police to conduct a joint door-to-door operation.

The council also highlighted the administration’s performance in eradicating poverty in the city, citing that the figure had remained high in the last five years. In 2016, there were still 385,840 people, or 3.75 percent of the capital’s total population, living under poverty line. (fac)
