olice have dispatched officers to search for five inmates who escaped from the Class II A Abepura Prison in Jayapura, Papua, on Tuesday.
“Thirty personnel have been assigned to pursue the inmates. I have also ordered our members to investigate the prison officials. It’s not the first this has happened. Once we find negligence to be the cause, we will take tough action against them,” said Jayapura Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Tober Sirait on Wednesday.
He said some of the inmates had been charged with drug crimes while the others committed violent thefts.
“The worse thing is that some of them have fled the prison several times before,” said Tober.
Feli Tabuni, one of the inmates, was charged with drug crimes and had fled the prison twice before. Three inmates -- Hery Kosay, Paul Doga and Maikel Sabulai -- were charged with theft while the last inmate, Agus Alua, was charged with theft involving violence.
The five inmates fled by destroying the security wire fence. They then threatened prison officials before they fled through the main entrance.
“Actually, there were seven inmates who attempted to flee the prison but two were caught by the prison guards,” said Tober.
On Feb.19, six inmates fled the prison by climbing the prison wall while on Jan.7, 13 inmates fled the prison by breaking through the main entrance. (ebf)
