entral Java’s Surakarta administration introduced an electronic registration system for vehicle roadworthy tests (KIR) on Friday to reduce long lines.
Under the e-KIR system, people can register to have their vehicles undergo the test online by sending a text message to a designated phone number managed by the Surakarta Transportation Agency.
“This system will also help curb illegal levies,” agency head Hari Prihatno said.
People will get a notification via text message about the payment — which should be transferred through banks — and when they should bring their vehicles in for the test. The administration is teaming up with Bank Jateng, a province-owned development bank, in providing the payment service system for the e-KIR.
“People had waited in line all day to register,” said Anindita Prayoga, the agency’s vehicle testing and workshop unit head. “Now people will only need to bring their cars in for the test.”
The test itself takes about 30 to 80 minutes.
