T

rains on the new railway connection between Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Jakarta’s inner city will start running early next month, according to Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi.

“[Operations] will begin in early December, on Dec. 2 or 3,” Budi said in Jakarta on Tuesday, as reported by tempo.co.

Initially, operations had been scheduled to start in late November. “Actually, operations could start on Nov. 25, but I want the trial period extended until next week, so that operations can kick off more convincingly,” the minister said.

Budi said he was still considering whether the general public should be allowed to ride the trains during the trial period.

The minister confirmed that the fare for the airport train would be Rp 100,000 (US$7.39) per trip.

Meanwhile, railway operator PT Railink said 10 trains had been prepared for the airport railway, with a capacity of 33,000 passengers per day.

For the time being, the trains will only stop at the stations Soekarno-Hatta and Sudirman Baru, but later they will also stop at Manggarai, Duri and Batu Ceper. Initially, state-owned railway operator PT KAI said the trains would also stop at Kota Station.

The train cars, produced by state-owned company PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA), are equipped with air conditioning, television, charging ports, information boards and toilets, while the stations are fitted with vending machines, tapping gates, escalators, ATMs, waiting lounges, commercial areas, meeting rooms, bathrooms and prayer rooms.
