ukit Duri evictees, who were entitled to receive compensation following a court ruling, face a challenge to receiving their desired redress after the Ciliwung-Cisadane Flood Control Office (BWSCC), one of the defendants, decided to appeal the verdict.
"BWSCC has appealed the verdict," Jakarta legal agency head Yayan Yuhana said on Monday.
With the appeal, the city administration could not yet disburse compensation to former Bukit Duri residents in South Jakarta, unless the ruling is upheld. Each of the 93 residents were originally entitled to receive Rp 200 million (US$14,740).
The administration would not appeal the verdict, as ordered by Governor Anies Baswedan, Yayan said as quoted by kompas.com.
Meanwhile, a lawyer representing the former Bukit Duri residents, Vera Soemarwi, said she had not yet received an official notification regarding the BWSCC's move to appeal the ruling.
The Central Jakarta District Court previously ruled in favor of the residents regarding forced eviction by the administration last year.
The Jakarta administration, under former governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama evicted, Bukit Duri residents on Jan. 12, 2016, as part of the administration’s plan to restore the Ciliwung River, in an effort to reduce flooding in the city. (fac)
