E-commerce platform Lazada Indonesia plans to implement an electronic payment gateway system this year, said Lazada Indonesia chief marketing officer Achmad Alkatiri in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The infrastructure of the electronic gateway system will be ready for use in the third or fourth quarter – during the annual National Online Shopping Day (Harbolnas), he added.

“I can't disclose the details of the system yet, but we are in the process of migrating from Lazada’s technology to Alibaba’s at the moment,” said Achmad, adding that the migration was expected to finish in March.

Alibaba Group is a majority stakeholder in Lazada, owning 83 percent of the e-commerce platform’s total shares.

Achmad expressed his optimism about Lazada’s prospects in Indonesia’s e-commerce industry with Alibaba’s new technology, aiming for double-digit, month-on-month growth in transaction volume.

Lazada recorded US$250 million gross merchandise value (GMV) across Southeast Asia in its Dec. 12 sales event; almost double its $123 million GMV in its Nov. 11 sale.

“For 2018, we are focusing on the improvement of the user experience through the newly updated website and application, which tailors the layout according to an individual’s shopping behavior. We will also expand our #UpgradeUKM program to 29 cities this year,” said Achmad.

The #UpgradeUKM program is Lazada’s initiative to coach small and medium enterprises on finance and digital marketing on its platform. (jlm/bbn)
