delegation of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi in Jakarta on Thursday to seek solutions for peace in the southern Philippines.
Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said the MILF, led by chairman Murad Ebrahim, visited Indonesia to study conflict resolution and “to learn from the peace process that has been achieved in Aceh. The minister has expressed Indonesia’s support for their efforts.”
The MILF delegation is expected to meet with Islamic organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah and with Vice President Jusuf Kalla, a central figure in the 2005 peace process in Aceh.
Since the 1990s, Indonesia has been consistently active in assisting the peace process in the southern Philippines. In its capacity as an international observer in the region, Indonesia has fielded a total of 84 civil and military personnel.
Asked whether the Indonesians held hostage by militant groups in the area were discussed, Arrmanatha said: “The foreign minister expressed concerns over this issue [...] and has asked for [MILF’s] help to free the hostages.”
