baby male giraffe was born at Taman Safari Indonesia Zoo in Bogor, West Java, on Sunday, bringing the zoo's total giraffe population to 11.
The mother giraffe, Emily, gave birth to the 90 kilogram baby at 1.24 p.m. with the assistance of zoo keepers, veterinarians and curators.
The gestation period for Emily was 14 months and one week, said Ardyta Widianti, a vet at the zoo, in a statement on Wednesday.
The birth was quite lengthy and Emily seemed anxious during the process.
"When the baby was born, he slowly stood up. Emily repeatedly kissed her baby, which is natural for mothers," Taman Safari spokesman Yulius Hardo said on Wednesday.
The unnamed baby giraffe's father, Kalou, stood nearby the cage, witnessing the birth of his baby, Yulius added.
Taman Safari director Jansen Manansang said the zoo was grateful for the birth of the giraffe.
"We're proud that the breeding program has been successful, thanks to the zoo keepers, vets, curators and staffers," he said.
He added that he hoped more protected animals could be born at the zoo.
In September last year, two giant pandas, Cai Tao and Hu Chun, arrived at the zoo.
The seven-year-old pandas live at the "Panda Castle" inside the zoo.
