T

he Jakarta Tourism Agency has sent circulars to nightclubs in the city, reminding them not to get involved in drug business. The move follows reports from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) that drug circulation is rampant at the entertainment spots.

"We continue to monitor with a persuasive approach through an awareness-raising campaign. We keep issuing circulars to remind them that they should not accommodate the sale of drugs," Jakarta Tourism Agency head Tinia Budiati told reporters at City Hall on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

She said that as a Tourism Agency, her office was not authorized to conduct raids, as such authority belonged to the BNN and the Public Order Agency.

BNN chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso previously said 36 out of 81 nightclubs operating in the city engaged in drug distribution activities. He claimed his office had gathered sufficient evidence and challenged the administration to take stern measures, including revoking the nightclubs' business permits.

Budi said he would not reveal the evidence to the administration unless there was a commitment from Jakarta to make an all-out effort to fight against drug trafficking.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has said he is committed to eradicating such illicit practices and plans to meet with Budi to discuss the issue. (fac)
