An investigation by the Central Jakarta Police into the 60-year-old woman reportedly found that she had been paying for the hotels using inherited money from her parents and her late husband, police chief Roma Hutajulu said on Wednesday.
“One of the children ran away and went to his former nanny. He told the former nanny and her relative [identified only as R] that he and his four adopted siblings had endured abusive parenting,” Roma said.
The woman was arrested on Feb. 28 in a hotel room in Central Jakarta where she was staying with her five adopted children. The children were not sent to school, the police said.
“We have just handed over the case to the Jakarta Police,” Roma said as quoted by kompas.com.
With support from the Indonesian Child Protection Institute (LPAI), R reported the mother to the police.
The mother’s lawyer, Eddi Danggur, said that he would hold a press conference to explain his client’s side of the story. (vla)
