Greenfields inaugurates East Java dairy farm

Dairy product manufacturer PT Greenfield Indonesia has opened a dairy farm in Blitar, East Java, to boost its fresh milk production.
The 170-hectare farm houses 4,000 Dutch Holstein, British Jersey and Australian cows. Its capacity will increase to 7,266 cows to boost production to more than 136,000 liters per day by 2020 from currently 115,000 liters, AustAsia Dairy Group CEO Edgar Collins said.
The operation of the Rp 612 billion (US$34 million) farm will also further strengthen Greenfield’s position as the leading dairy product manufacturer in Indonesia, he said, adding that the company was mulling over opening more farms.
“I’m not sure [about opening more farms in the near future] but I’m not going to say no either – we will just see how everything goes,” Collins said during the farm’s inauguration on Tuesday.
Greenfields is a major dairy exporter in Southeast Asia, as 20 percent of its annual production is exported to countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Cambodia.
Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the new farm would bring more prospects to the future of the domestic dairy industry, which demands 3.7 million liters of fresh milk every year.
“We aim to supply 41 percent of domestic demand from currently 23 percent by 2022, so there is a lot more room for those who want to invest in the dairy processing business in Indonesia,” said Airlangga. (bbn)
