anpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri has said he would invite other relevant ministers to talk about the implementation of raids on foreign workers, who were allegedly employed illegally in the country.

He said the meeting was to discuss a possible issuance of circulars to relevant government officials as guidance for carrying out operations at companies that employed expatriates.

“We will discuss the supervision mechanism by the ministries, immigration offices and the police,” he said in Jakarta on Tuesday as reported by tempo.co.

Manif’s statement came after President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo criticized the implementation of the raids on alleged illegal workers by government officers.

“I got reports from a number of employers of expatriates, who are disturbed by the raids,” said the President at the Presidential Office when he chaired a limited Cabinet meeting to discuss the management of foreign workers.

The President criticized that the government institutions lacked coordination in supervising the foreign workers. He stressed that in the globalization era, Indonesia had to be ready to accept foreign workers, beside sending workers to other countries.

Jokowi said all parties had to tolerate the arrival of expatriates, which is part of the effort to maintain a good investment atmosphere, as long as their presence does not significantly affect the absorption of local workers. (bbn)
