he Transportation Ministry and airport train operator PT Railink have mulled over the possibility of allowing commuter line passengers at Duri Station in West Jakarta to use the airport train in the morning and afternoon due to overcrowding at the station following the commencement of the airport train's operations that has seen a reduction in the commuter line's schedule.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said an allocation of some 100 passengers traveling from Duri Station to Tangerang Station would be allowed to use the airport train by using special tickets.
While usually the ticket price for the airport train is Rp 70,000 (US$ 5.08), the passengers will only need to pay Rp 3,000, the normal price of the commuter line from Duri Station to Tangerang Station.
“The price will be the same as the commuter line ticket. We will provide a subsidy [for the ticket price] so Railink, as a private company, won’t suffer losses,” Budi said according to kompas.com.
Ruisa, a representative of the commuter line, expressed dismay that the airport train service had come at the expense of commuter line trips, which transported more passengers than the airport train.
She said the airport train service, which ran every 30 minutes, only carried 100 passengers.
On the other hand, thousands of commuter line passengers were packed on the station's platform waiting for their train, Ruisa said.
Passengers have complained about the reduced Duri-Tangerang commuter line schedule and the poor transit facilities at Duri Station that have caused thousands to wait for hours and face difficulties switching trains.
Since March 29, commuter line operator PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) has implemented a modified schedule for the Duri-Tangerang route, reducing the number of daily round trips from 90 to 80, to accommodate the airport train. (cal)
