Some 8,000 runners from Indonesia and abroad competed in the race, which comprised four categories, a full marathon, half marathon and 10 and five kilometer events.
Prambanan Temple awoke at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning when thousands of runners flooded the temple complex, located on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java.
As many as 8,000 registered runners from Indonesia and abroad prepared themselves to participate in the Mandiri Yogya Marathon 2018.
The flag-off ceremony for the full marathon category (42 kilometers) occurred at 4.45 a.m. and was the reason for the early morning hustle and bustle at the grand temple, which according to legend, was built as a failed attempt by a warrior named Bandung Bondowoso to win the heart of a princess, Rara Jonggrang. As a condition for marriage Princess Rara Jonggrang required Bandung to build 1,000 temples in one night. Bandung, however was only able to build 999 temples before dawn greeted the earth the following day.
The Mandiri Yogya Marathon 2018 featured four categories, the full Marathon, half marathon (21 kilometers), 10 kilometer and five kilometer. While many races stick to main roads, the Mandiri Yogya Marathon celebrates the area’s history and tradition by taking a route that passes through villages that surround the temple.
