akarta began a trial run of the extension of the odd-even policy on Jl. Sudirman - Jl. MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, on Monday to synchronize the policy with operations at toll gates in peripheral areas of Jakarta.

The odd-even policy in the Sudirman-Thamrin area, which allows vehicles with odd- and even-numbered license plates to pass only on days with odd and even dates, respectively, previously lasted from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. With the extension, the traffic restriction starts at 6 a.m.

Unlike at the toll gates, officials will not turn back cars on the first day of the trial run on Jl. Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin.

On the morning of April 23, several cars with even-numbered plates were seen using the Semanggi cloverleaf interchange despite the change. Police officials in the area did not ticket the even-numbered cars.

Jakarta Police traffic director Sr. Comr. Yusuf confirmed that the police had not ticketed any cars in Sudirman-Thamrin area before 7 a.m. because the policy was still on trial.

"We are still evaluating the odd-even policy extension to figure out whether we will need additional supervision in the area or not," Yusuf told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Greater Jakarta Transportation Body (BPTJ) head Bambang Prihartono said that during the trial drivers would not be ticketed because officials were still informing citizens about the new traffic policy. (ami/wit)
