T

he management of Old City discotheque in Tambora, West Jakarta, has deplored the city administration’s plan to shut down the place following the arrest of an alleged drug user who started a fight inside the club on Monday, saying the move would make 100 club employees jobless.

A man identified as FB was arrested by police after allegedly causing a fight in the club and was found to be under the influence of ecstasy and crystal methamphetamine.

Old City operational manager George M. Andaritji said on Wednesday he had asked the police “to consider the livelihoods of 100 club employees who would be jobless should the club be shut down.”

“The workers, all above 20 years of age, have been working for years,” he said, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

According to George, FB did not consume drugs or liquor at the club but at another place before coming to the club to ask for money from his friend, but his friend failed to fulfill his request.

“He asked for Rp 50,000 [US$3.59], but his friend only gave him Rp 5,000. He became angry and the fight began. He threw a glass at the wall near the DJ’s stage and men’s toilet,” he added.

Old City has been temporarily closed since the arrest.

The Jakarta administration has committed to eradicating drug distribution at nightclubs.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said the administration had sent a letter to the West Jakarta Police and the Tambora Police to ask about the details of the incident. (cal)
