A

four-year-old child, identified only as AM, has died in Bontomarannu district, Gowa regency, South Sulawesi, after allegedly being physically abused and bitten by Hasan Basri, 29, the child's father.

AM’s mother said on Saturday afternoon that Hasan had told her family that he wanted to take AM for a ride to Losari Beach in Makassar. A few hours later Hasan called, saying that AM had fallen from the motorcycle and that the child had been taken to Syech Yusuf Sungguminasa Hospital.

In the hospital AM’s condition worsened before the child passed away on Sunday.

The police, which were informed about the child’s unusual death and wounds, transported AM’s body to Bhayangkara Hospital for an autopsy.

“We found many wounds on the child’s body, and we can clearly see that they were not caused by a traffic accident,” Bontomarannu Police chief, Adj. Comr. Robert said after the autopsy, as quoted by kompas.com

The police arrested Hasan and named him a suspect immediately after the autopsy results came out. At first Hasan denied responsibility for his child’s wounds. But after further questioning he admitted to harming the child, including biting and pinching him. He said he was annoyed by his child. A local report by liputan6.com quoted South Sulawesi Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Dicky Sondani as saying that the child had urinated on Hasan’s pants.

Police said Hasan would be charged with assaulting a child under Article 80 of the 2002 Child Protection Law, which carries a minimum 15-year prison sentence. (evi/hol)
