Vessel runs aground on Thousand Islands reef

The Ghanda Nusantara 15 reportedly rammed into the pristine coral reef near Pari Island in Thousand Islands regency. The accident occurred on Saturday at around 7:15 p.m.

vessel identified as The Ghanda Nusantara 15 has reportedly rammed into the pristine coral reef near Pari Island in Thousand Islands regency. The accident occurred on Saturday at around 7:15 p.m.

The vessel was on its way from Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, to Tidung Island, Thousand Islands.

Some local residents arrived at the accident site on Sunday and found visible signs of impact in a 370-square-meter area of the reef.

“Until today, the vessel remains aground at the location and has caused damage to 370 sq m of coral reef in the area,” Pari Island management said in a statement on Monday. (vny/dmr)


Editor's note: The earlier version of this article stated that the vessel that rammed into a coral reef near Pari Island, Thousand Islands regency, in Jakarta belonged to state-owned shipping operator PT Pelni. Pelni, which sent The Jakarta Post a note denying ownership of the Ghanda Nusantara 15.
