A

participant of the computer-based Joint Entrance Test for State Universities (SBMPTN) held at the language center of Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday, was rushed to hospital after she was found to have given birth to a baby in a toilet on the campus.

Unhas spokesperson Ishaq Rahman said the incident was discovered after Suri, a cleaning service officer, found the baby when she was about to clean the rest room at 12:30 p.m. local time.

“She heard a baby crying from inside the rest room. She searched to find where the sound was coming from and found the newly born baby in the toilet,” said Ishaq.

When he was found, the baby boy weighing only 1,400 grams was smeared in blood with the umbilical cord still attached to his body.

Ishaq said the SBMPTN committee officials were certain that the baby belonged to Ir, 18, one of entrance test participants, as she was reported to have spent around 1.5 hours in the toilet alone before the baby was found.

“In the middle of the test, she asked for permission from the test supervisors to go to the toilet, saying she had a stomach ache. Actually, no participants were allowed to leave the test venues before the exam was finished but it seemed she was really in pain so she was allowed to leave the room,” said Ishaq.

“Ir admitted that the baby boy was her son. She and her baby are receiving treatment at Hasanuddin University Hospital,” said Ishaq. The Tamalanrea Police are handling the case. (ebf)
