J

atinegara subdistrict in East Jakarta is in limbo over its office, as its new building is under construction while it cannot afford the rent at its temporary premises in a rented house on Jl. Puskesmas.

East Jakarta official Dewi Purnamasari said the subdistrict could only afford rent until June.

“We have tried negotiating with the landlord saying that we do not have the available funds for the rent just yet. Even if funds are made available they would only be approved in November. However, the landlord is demanding payment before then,” she said in a video uploaded to the Jakarta administration's YouTube account.

“The worst case scenario is that we will have to pay the rent using our own money. We are still trying to deliver services for residents,” Dewi said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

She said another option was to rent a building belonging to PT Jakarta Industrial Estate Pulogadung (JIEP), a city-owned company. The company asked for Rp 30 million (US$2,118) per year as rent.

Jakarta official Saefullah said government officials should not use their private money to pay for office rental. Saefullah urged the East Jakarta administration to request Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to send a letter to PT JIEP requesting that it allow one of its assets to be used by the Jatinegara subdistrict office.
