A

s expected, the Indonesian men’s team collected the essential first victory in the Thomas Cup championship as it outclassed Canada 5-0 on Sunday.

Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) head of sport development Susy Susanti lauded the team for its prime performance to meet its target.

“We were optimistic that we could overcome Canada, and as you can see, we won 5-0,” Susy told journalist after the matches at IMPACT Arena in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, coach Herry I. Pierngadi said the team used the match against Canada to adapt to the venue as well as the dynamics of this year’s competition, including to strategize when Indonesia plays host Thailand in the next Group B match on Tuesday.

“[The level of playing] of our opponents today was indeed still below our players’. [Today’s matches] served as a chance [for our shuttlers] to adapt to the courts. It is important because we will play on a different court when we play Thailand,” said Herry, who is in-charge of the men’s doubles category, adding that he had warned his shuttlers to look out for drifts within the venue.
