View all search resultshe hearing session of Islamic State (IS) ideologue Aman Abdurrahman at the South Jakarta District Court was briefly suspended after a loud sound was heard outside the courtroom, which was suspected to be an explosion.
The sound apparently came from a construction project located across from the court building.
However, the loud sound, which was heard twice, put those in the courtroom on guard, and the hearing presided over by Ahmad Zaini was suspended.
Four armed mobile brigade personnel immediately stood around Aman.
Aman, who is set to read his defense statement after prosecutors demanded the death penalty for his alleged involvement in several terror acts in the country, managed to maintain his poker face.
According to South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Indra Jafar, construction workers wanted to cut a barrel open using a welding machine, however the empty barrel, which used to contain a chemical substance used in construction, reacted to the heat thus causing the sound.
The hearing has been resumed.(iwa)
