uthorities are accelerating the construction of the Kali Kuto curve bridge, which is located on the Batang-Semarang toll road. The bridge, which weighs 2,400 tons and is 100 meters in length, will become a landmark in the area.

“The bridge consists of 12 parts with a composition of 6:6. The installation of the bridge was conducted on-site,” said Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono on Saturday.

With a total weight of 2,400 tons, it is difficult for workers to assemble the bridge in a factory. The installation can only be conducted on-site because the location is not prone to earthquakes.

Kali Kuto is the biggest curve bridge in Indonesia that has been assembled on-site. Unlike Kali Kuto, the Holtekamp curve bridge in Jayapura, Papua, had to be assembled by state shipbuilder company PT PAL Indonesia at its factory in Surabaya, East Java, because Jayapura is prone to earthquakes.

As of Saturday, 10 parts of the Kali Kuto bridge have been assembled. The bridge is expected to be completed two days before Idul Fitri to accommodate homebound travelers.

According to official data, 9.51 million people will travel via Central Java to their hometowns to celebrate Idul Fitri, up by 15.9 percent from 8.2 million during last year’s holiday season.

They will use 1.19 million motorcycles, 812,000 private vehicles, 44,000 buses, 29 ships and 849 flights, while the remainder will travel by train. (ebf)
