he Jakarta administration has planned to integrate its Muslim Charitable Donations Board (Bazis) into the National Alms Agency (Baznas) in the next three months to follow the prevailing law on alms management.
The decision to integrate and also change its name into Baznas Jakarta was made on Thursday when Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno met Baznas chairman Bambang Sudibyo at the Baznas headquarters in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
“To follow Law No. 23/2011 [on alms management], we have agreed to do the integration, and therefore Bazis Jakarta’s name will be changed to Baznas Jakarta,” Sandiaga said. As the result of the change, Baznas Jakarta will be required to periodically report alms collection and distribution to Baznas twice a year.
Based on the law, Sandiaga further said, Baznas Jakarta’s financial report will be audited by a public accounting firm.
Separately, Baznas chairman Bambang Sudibyo said the administration should soon form a team to select Baznas Jakarta’s commissioners in accordance with the law on alms management. “Baznas will give some names of people who can be chosen by the Jakarta governor [Anies Baswedan] to be the body’s commissioners.”
Bambang previously urged the administration to integrate Bazis into Baznas as regulated in the law, or else Bazis Jakarta’s officials could be implicated in a criminal case for collecting and distributing alms without Baznas’ permission.
Baznas was formed in November 2011 to manage alms nationwide. Every alms body that had been established before Baznas should integrate themselves into the agency by November 2016 at the latest. Bazis Jakarta was formed by then-governor Ali Sadikin in 1968 based on Gubernatorial Decree Cb. 14/8/18/68.
