he Transportation Ministry has predicted that the flow of Idul Fitri holiday travelers returning to cities from their hometowns will peak again on Sunday as students will resume their school activities on Monday.
“Monday will be the first day of school after this long holiday,” said the ministry's Air Transportation Director General Agus Santoso as quoted by kompas.com during an inspection at Adi Soemarmo International Airport in Surakarta, East Java, on Thursday.
According to the Transportation Ministry, two days before Idul Fitri, which serves as the peak of the Islamic holiday’s mudik (exodus) period, Adi Soemarmo airport accommodated 7,511 passengers. Meanwhile, three days after Idul Fitri, the airport served 7,610 passengers, most of whom were returning to the cities in which they work after celebrating the festivity in their hometowns.
“During Idul Fitri, the routes from and to Surakarta are mostly from Bali, Jakarta, Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan and Palembang in South Sumatra,” said the ministry.
An AirNav report for Adi Soemarmo Airport reveals that 76 to 81 flights depart from and arrive at the airport every day during this year’s Idul Fitri holiday season. This figure shows an increase from normal days, in which it usually records 66 flights.
Agus said airports in Surakarta and Yogyakarta, as well as in Semarang and Surabaya, were the busiest during Idul Fitri in 2018.
“The flow of passengers flying back to cities through Adi Soemarmo is relatively safe, smooth and controlled well, even though the number of passengers is higher than usual,” said Agus.
He said such a smooth flow of passengers was caused by good terminal facilities, adequate security precautions and the availability of flights at the airport. (ebf)
