T

he Jakarta Police have decided to delay their plan to include passing a psychological test as a requirement to obtain a driver’s license, citing they needed to “improve the system to carry out the test”.

The police initially wanted to apply the new policy, which currently only binds public transportation drivers, on June 25.

“We have yet to determine the time frame; we will let you know when. If we pushed it to be applied next week, we’re afraid it won’t be effective since we need to improve the system first,” Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Adj. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said on Friday as quoted by tempo.co.

Previously Jakarta traffic police driver’s license section head Comr. Fahri Siregar said the requirement was made to comply with Law No. 22/2009 on traffic and a National Police chief regulation on driver’s licenses, which states that all drivers shall be physically and mentally fit.

He said that mental fitness should be screened by the psychological test.

While some praise the police's effort to comply with the prevailing regulations, many doubted the policy would be effective and would end up as a mere formality that would result in additional fees for driver’s license applicants.(iwa)
