akarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Idham Azis has ordered officers to actively prevent robberies, following a recent spike in street crimes across the capital.

“I order all precinct police chiefs to prevent robberies to make citizens feel safe,” Idham said on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.

“The Asian Games will also be held soon, so we must prevent crimes to make competing athletes feel safe and comfortable,” he said.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono has advised Jakartans to protect themselves against any crime, including robberies, adding that they should always be on alert and protect their personal belongings when moving in a crowd.

“For example, don’t use cellphones while driving a car or riding a motorcycle. That is a target for robbers and it gives them the chance to commit a crime,” Argo said on Monday.

Jakartans are still reeling over the death of a 37-year-old app-base motorcycle taxi passenger, who was killed during a robbery in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, on Sunday.
