outh Jakarta Police have arrested five people on suspicion of committing violent robberies in Cipete on Tuesday as the capital continues an operation against street crime.

Police chief Sr. Comr. Indra Jafar said one of the suspects, identified as DB, was apprehended on Jl. H. Ali, Cipete, at around 5 a.m. as he was about to reportedly commit theft.

“Police officers arrested the man on the spot,” Indra said as quoted by kompas.com, adding that four other suspects were then caught, also in South Jakarta, after getting further information from DB. The other suspects have been identified as WR, 18; TA, 16; AP, 19 and FA, 17.

WR and TA, according to the police, had stolen a motorcycle and cellphone from a man in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, on June 30.

The five suspects also reportedly committed crimes outside South Jakarta, including in Serpong, South Tangerang and Palmerah, West Jakarta.

“We are conducting an intensive investigation,” Jafar added.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said earlier that the operation to combat street crime would run until Aug. 3, while personnel had been divided into 16 teams —13 of which comprised personnel from police precincts, while the remaining three teams were from the Jakarta Police.
